The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, has urged men facing financial difficulties to consider marrying only one wife to ensure they can properly provide for their families.
He expressed concern over the challenges arising from polygamy, emphasizing that many family heads struggle to fulfill their responsibilities.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 30th annual Ramadan lecture organized by the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), the Emir acknowledged that while Islam allows polygamy, not every man has the financial capacity to support multiple households.
He shared an example from his palace, where 192 families reside, with some men fathering over 50 children.
“How can someone adequately care for such a large number of dependents?” he questioned.
The Emir also called for reforms in the Islamiyya education system to include more teachings on the rights of girls, believing this could foster more progressive communities.
Additionally, he criticized the judiciary for worsening societal issues, citing the case of a young woman sentenced to two years in prison over a minor debt of N6,000. He revealed that during a prison visit, he was able to secure the release of eight people with just N200,000.
To address family disputes, the Emir highlighted the palace’s reliance on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods, which help resolve conflicts related to marriage, inheritance, and land issues—common sources of family tensions.
Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, echoed his sentiments, urging religious leaders to encourage men to take greater responsibility in their homes.
She pointed out that many family duties have fallen on women and stressed the need for men to step up.
Meanwhile, Hajiya Nafisa Isah, the Amirah of FOMWAN Kaduna State, announced plans to establish a fully operational skills acquisition center aimed at empowering women and youth.
