Emir Sanusi Criticizes Tinubu’s Economic Policies Amid Rising Hardships

Newsie Events:

Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Wednesday criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stating that it lacks credible individuals to effectively communicate its economic policies.

“I don’t want to help this government. They’re my friends. If they don’t act like friends, I won’t either. They don’t even have credible people who can explain what they are doing. I’m not going to help,” Sanusi said.

He further explained, “Honestly, I could share insights to help explain what we are experiencing—perhaps it was foreseeable or avoidable. But I’ve chosen not to. I will not comment on the economy.”

Sanusi made these remarks during the 21st Memorial Lecture of Chief Gani Fawehinmi held in Lagos on Wednesday.

His comments followed his earlier expression of concern about the severe economic hardships Nigerians have endured under Tinubu’s administration in 2024.

“People are in a dire situation,” he remarked. “I’ve heard that some people now resort to buying half a pepper due to the soaring cost of food. This is unbearable.”

Tinubu’s policies, including the removal of subsidies and the unification of the exchange rate, have caused fuel prices to rise to N1,000 per liter, with the naira trading at over N1,500 to the dollar.

Inflation has soared above 34% in the past 19 months, leading to a sharp increase in food prices. This economic strain sparked a 10-day protest by Nigerians in August 2024.

However, Tinubu has consistently argued that the current hardships resulting from his policies are a necessary sacrifice for a better future.
