There was a fire outbreak at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) head office Akure, on Thursday.
The electoral body tweeted in their official twitter page that the fire which started at about 8 pm gutted the container housing Smart Card Readers but men of the fire service were on ground to put out the inferno. So far, over 5000 card readers have been destroyed in the inferno as the cause of the outbreak unknown.
“The National Commissioner, Barrister Festus Okoye, who is in Ondo State in connection with preparations for the Ondo State Governorship election scheduled for 10th October 2020, rushed to the office at about 8 pm,” INEC added.
While Confirming the incident, Chief Press Secretary/ Media Adviser to the Independent National Electoral Commission, Rotimi Oyekanmi said Several card readers were damaged as fire gutted the head office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Barrister Okoye assured that an investigation would be carried out to unravel what triggered the fire because the cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained.
