Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has reaffirmed his commitment to achieving lasting peace in Effium, urging stakeholders of Ohaukwu Local Government Area to work together to restore harmony in the community. Speaking at a Christmas gathering with Ohaukwu people in his hometown of Oferekpe Agbaja, the Governor emphasized that the Effium and Ezza people are kin and should prioritize peace. He assured the public that the government is prepared to resolve the crisis impartially.
Regarding those detained in connection with the crisis, Nwifuru acknowledged requests for their release. He instructed a peace committee, led by Ambassador Frank Ogbuewu, to review the cases of detainees. Preliminary findings revealed that some individuals were falsely claiming to be imprisoned due to the communal conflict, leading to the need for further investigation before any decisions on their release. Nwifuru expressed confidence that those eligible for release would be freed once the committee concludes its work.
The Governor also praised the Ohaukwu people for their ongoing support in promoting good governance. Senator Anthony Agbo, leader of the delegation, had previously appealed to the Governor for the release of individuals who have been held in detention for nearly four years due to the crisis.
