The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Gboyega Akosile, has denied claims that the governor played any role in the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Akosile described the impeachment as a purely legislative issue, with no involvement from the governor.
Akosile clarified that the governor had been preoccupied with important state matters and was unaware of the internal decisions of the House of Assembly, which led to Obasa’s removal.
He emphasized that the event was a prerogative of the legislators, and Sanwo-Olu only learned of the impeachment through the media, just like the general public.
This response comes in light of rumors suggesting that the governor’s office may have been behind the impeachment, possibly due to a strained relationship between the executive and legislative arms of the state government.
The Lagos State House of Assembly had impeached Obasa, a six-term lawmaker, on Monday, electing his deputy, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, as the new Speaker.
The House also suspended the Clerk of the Assembly, Olalekan Onafeko, and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees.
