Governor Sanwo-Olu Condemns Divisive Social Media Campaign Targeting Igbo People

Newsie Events:–

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has strongly denounced a social media campaign urging Igbo people to leave Lagos and the Southwest region of Nigeria.

Through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu condemned a post by the handle ‘@LagosPedia’ on X (formerly Twitter), which threatened an ‘#IgboMustGo’ protest scheduled from August 20th to 30th, 2024.

The controversial account, which had approximately 42,000 followers, vanished on Thursday.

Akosile clarified that neither Governor Sanwo-Olu nor the Lagos State Government supports the “reckless, divisive, and dangerous rhetoric” propagated by the account.

He affirmed that Lagos is home to all Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic background.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu perceives the post as not only reckless and divisive but also an attempt to create discord between the Yoruba in the Southwest and other ethnic groups, particularly those who have made Lagos their permanent residence,” Akosile stated.

The Governor urged Lagosians to remain calm and not to be swayed by individuals or groups attempting to incite tension in the state.

He also called on security agencies to investigate the origins of the handle and hold those responsible accountable.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized his commitment to maintaining peace in Lagos and encouraged citizens to ignore such divisive posts.

In a recent address, he also spoke on the broader national challenges and the possible adverse effects of nationwide protests against “bad government” and economic hardship.

He warned against actions that could derail progress and urged patience as economic reforms take effect under the Bola Tinubu administration.

Reflecting on the 2020 EndSARS protests, Sanwo-Olu reminded citizens of the extensive damage caused when peaceful protests turned violent, citing the destruction of properties including the Lagos High Court, 45 police stations, 12 Local Government offices, 7 Fire Stations, and the Forensic Centre.

“We will NOT allow history to repeat itself,” he asserted.
