The House of Representatives has agreed with the Senate’s decision to remove Danladi Umar, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). This follows a motion by Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere, citing Umar’s involvement in a public altercation with a security guard at Banex Plaza in Abuja, which led to an investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions. Despite admitting to the incident, Umar failed to attend subsequent hearings, hindering the investigation.
Ihonvbere argued that Umar’s removal was necessary to protect the integrity of the CCT and uphold the rule of law in Nigeria. Although a constitutional objection was raised by Mansur Soro, questioning the procedure and stating that President Bola Tinubu should have initiated the process, the Speaker ruled in favor of proceeding. The House voted in favor of the motion, aligning with the Senate’s earlier resolution. Although the Senate initially made an error by citing the wrong constitutional section, this was later corrected.
