HURIWA, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, has praised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for establishing a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the violence following recent local government elections. The organization described this initiative as timely and essential for justice and accountability.

In a statement, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, emphasized the importance of holding accountable those they termed “political terrorists” responsible for the unrest, which included the burning of local government headquarters. The seven-member commission, chaired by Justice Ibiwengi Roseline Minakiri, aims to uncover the causes of the violence and ensure accountability.

HURIWA called for the involvement of security forces to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their political influence, appear before the commission if summoned. They expressed concern over President Bola Tinubu’s response, criticizing him for not directly addressing the perpetrators and instead suggesting that disputes be settled in court.
