The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has responded to Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal’s accusations against former Governor Bello Matawalle, suggesting that the claims lack concrete evidence. HURIWA criticized Lawal for airing unsubstantiated allegations on television, questioning the motives behind such public statements.
Lawal accused Matawalle of complicity in banditry and mismanagement of the state’s finances, claiming over N250 billion is unaccounted for. HURIWA characterized these allegations as politically motivated and a potential attempt to tarnish Matawalle’s reputation. The group emphasized the need for both officials to focus on governance rather than engaging in political disputes, particularly as insecurity and economic instability persist in the state.
Additionally, HURIWA raised concerns over Lawal’s administration approving N19 billion for kitchen equipment for the First Lady, which has drawn public outrage amidst widespread poverty. The rights group called for transparency and accountability in government spending and urged both leaders to collaborate on addressing the security challenges facing Zamfara and the North-West region.
