Rep. Unyime Idem, chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement, has issued a stern warning to Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) regarding their failed attendance at parliamentary invitations.
At a recent public hearing on amending the Chartered Institute of Purchasing And Supply Management Act 2007, he emphasized that non-compliance with parliamentary directives could result in the committee invoking legislative powers, potentially leading to legal action.
Idem highlighted the committee’s dedication to enforcing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in procurement practices as mandated by the Public Procurement Act, 2007. He stressed the importance of adhering to due process to prevent legal consequences and ensure proper utilization of public resources.
The ongoing bill seeks alignment with global procurement standards and has been referred to Idem’s committee for thorough review and public consultation. He emphasized the significance of public hearings in gathering diverse perspectives to inform legislative decisions, particularly on issues crucial to professional standards and national development agendas.
