As the 2027 general elections approach, the House of Representatives is taking significant steps to advance the Independent Candidacy Bill. A new website has been launched to enhance public awareness and facilitate interaction regarding the proposed legislation.
Rep. Akin Rotimi (APC-Ekiti State), the spokesperson for the House, addressed journalists in Abuja, emphasizing the bill’s goal of increasing political participation in Nigeria. He highlighted the importance of improving the electoral system as the country prepares for its eighth electoral cycle, noting that the country has experienced seven since the beginning of the Fourth Republic.
“This bill is crucial and involves a constitutional amendment. It requires substantial input from various stakeholders, which is why we have recommitted it to the Committee on Constitutional Review for thorough examination,” Rotimi stated. He mentioned ongoing advocacy efforts aimed at garnering support among legislators and the public, with positive feedback received thus far.
The newly launched website aims to clarify misconceptions surrounding the bill, providing detailed information about its provisions and objectives. Rotimi, who originally introduced the bill in the 7th Assembly, acknowledged the lack of full support in previous assemblies but expressed optimism for its future.
