The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed fire gutted its office in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident, which occurred on Monday afternoon, led to the destruction of 706 ballot boxes, 50 election bags, 322 apron vests, and other essential election materials.
In a statement posted on its official X account, INEC explained that the fire was triggered by a sudden power surge after the restoration of public electricity. The fire completely consumed the storage area that housed petrol generators and various election-related items.
Among the destroyed items were three electric generators, 140 stamps, 50 ballot box seals, and various forms, envelopes, posters, and booklets.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.
