Billionaire kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, has informed the Lagos State High Court of his willingness to surrender all his properties as part of a plea bargain agreement. He appealed for leniency on compassionate grounds.
Evans proposed forfeiting 14 brand-new trucks to the Lagos State Government, which would then sell them and transfer the proceeds to his victims. His co-defendants—Joseph Emeka, Victor Aduba, and Linus Opara—are also negotiating plea deals with the government.
The defendants face a five-count charge, including conspiracy, kidnapping, and attempted murder. The case, previously halted, resumed in January 2023 under Justice Sherifat Sonaike after the retirement of Justice Adedayo Akintoye.
During the hearing, the prosecution confirmed that Evans’ counsel, Emefo Etudo, had submitted a preliminary plea bargain application for review. While other defendants also sought plea deals, one had yet to submit a formal request to the Attorney General.
This marks the second time Evans has pursued a plea bargain. He previously made a similar request before Justice Ibironke Coker at the Ikeja High Court. Currently, he faces five separate criminal cases in Lagos State, with two convictions already resulting in life imprisonment and a 14-year sentence.
In his plea, Evans claimed he had repented during his incarceration at Kirikiri Maximum Prison.
He stated that the Nigerian government had granted him a scholarship, and he had completed various educational programs, including earning a National Certificate in Education (NCE) in Economics.
He is also in his second year of Political Science at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
Additionally, Evans trained in welding and metal fabrication under the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity. His certificates and student ID were submitted as evidence of his rehabilitation.
Justice Sherifat Sonaike has adjourned the case until April 17, 2025, for either a trial or a decision on the plea bargain application.
