The Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the state government over the delay in the payment of November 2024 salaries for local government workers. In a statement released in Ilorin, the NLC revealed that about 75% of workers, particularly those employed by local government areas, have not received their salaries for November. Affected workers include members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).
The NLC has called on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to ensure the prompt release of the withheld salaries to avoid industrial unrest. The union also emphasized that it will not accept the payment of December 2024 salaries unless the full November salaries are paid first. The ultimatum gives the state government until Thursday, December 19, 2024, to resolve the issue, warning that failure to do so will lead to a total shutdown of the state in accordance with labor laws. The NLC urged the government to act swiftly to prevent further tensions.
