The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has expressed serious concerns over the Nigerian government’s response to accusations made by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the military leader of Niger Republic, regarding France’s alleged involvement in funding and supporting Boko Haram insurgents. According to LND, Tchiani’s claims, which suggest that France is complicit in destabilizing the region, cannot be dismissed lightly given his position and access to sensitive intelligence.
LND contends that the Nigerian government’s rejection of these allegations fails to address significant issues, particularly the presence of sophisticated weaponry in the hands of insurgent groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP. The group argues that such weapons, which are difficult to obtain without state-sponsored or illicit global networks, suggest that international actors may be involved, even if the government denies any collaboration with France.
Furthermore, LND criticizes the federal government’s actions in relation to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), pointing out the contradictions in President Tinubu’s leadership, especially regarding the calls for military intervention in Niger and the broader sanctions imposed on the country, which have reportedly exacerbated suffering.
The group’s critique also highlights the ongoing instability in the region and the persistence of insurgent strongholds, questioning whether the government is truly committed to addressing the root causes of terrorism, including arms proliferation and terrorist funding networks. LND believes the Nigerian government’s response lacks transparency and fails to address the serious concerns raised by Tchiani’s accusations.
