The Middle Belt Elders Council (MBEC) is advocating for the creation of more states in Nigeria to enhance development and ensure equitable resource management.
Chairman Gen. Lekwot Zamani (rtd) argues that increasing the number of states would foster healthy competition, instill a sense of belonging, and improve governance.
He critiques the push for regionalism, highlighting its historical marginalization of minority groups.
The council supports a federal structure based on states as recommended in the 2014 National Conference, emphasizing that this would better utilize the region’s agricultural potential and natural resources, ultimately addressing poverty and insecurity.
