Muslim group issue warning against extension of police IGP’s tenure.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued a stern warning against the tenure extension for Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof Ishaq Akintola, expressed concerns that this extension, facilitated by an amendment to the Police Act, could undermine the progress made in improving police efficiency and public confidence. Specifically, the amendment allows the IGP to remain in office beyond the usual retirement age of 60.

While the police force has seen improvements in security, such as the rescue of kidnapped victims and solving major crimes, MURIC fears that extending the IGP’s tenure could sow division within the force and harm its cohesion. The move has sparked a significant debate, with some supporting the extension for continuity, while others view it as a violation of the Police Act, resulting in protests and calls for the IGP’s removal from office.
