NEMA report flooding in Nigeria between April, September 2024 impact over one million people.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that flooding in Nigeria between April and September 2024 has impacted over one million people. The floods have displaced 625,239 individuals and resulted in 259 fatalities. NEMA Director-General Mrs. Zubaida Umar, speaking at the National Emergency Coordination Forum in Abuja, highlighted that 29 states and 172 local government areas have been affected.

To address the crisis, NEMA has activated Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, deployed additional staff for search and rescue, and provided essential resources like water purification equipment. Despite the scale of the disaster, Umar reassured that the situation remains manageable with ongoing support from international partners.

Challenges persist, especially in Maiduguri, where there are issues with insufficient materials and facilities at camps. Accurate communication and fact-checking on disaster management were also emphasized by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to combat misinformation.
