Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticized many Nigerian politicians, accusing them of seeking public office solely to enrich themselves and their associates while leaving the country in a worse state.
In his new book, “Nigeria: Past and Future,” Obasanjo revealed that these leaders borrow billions of naira, assuming they can repay using public funds once elected
The book, which profiles the behavior of political leaders at both federal and state levels, was released as part of the celebrations marking his 88th birthday last week.
Obasanjo described most Nigerian leaders—ranging from governors and presidents to ministers and local government chairpersons—as unprepared, self-serving, and corrupt.
He argued that their actions deepen the country’s poverty and underdevelopment.
Citing an example, Obasanjo referenced a governor who owed billions to banks before taking office.
Within two years, without any legitimate business operations, the governor settled all debts.
In his second term, the same governor allegedly diverted nearly half of the state’s resources for personal gain.
According to Obasanjo, such practices are widespread across the country, with only a few exceptions.
He further alleged that these leaders silence potential whistleblowers by offering small payouts to their staff and associates, ensuring that corruption continues unchecked during and after their time in office.
