☆☆☆ Says Yoruba Muslims do not recognize the Sultan as their leader.
Newsie Events:-
The Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Movement has strongly criticized the Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for his recent call to implement Sharia law in Yorubaland, describing it as “disrespectful.”
In a statement signed by its leader, Professor Banji Akintoye, the secessionist group argued that Islamic teachings do not require Yoruba Muslims to recognize the Sultan as their leader.
The statement also refuted the claim that Yoruba people are denying Yoruba Muslims their religious rights, calling it a “falsehood.” It urged the Fulani nation to reconsider its approach to religious and political issues in Nigeria, warning against the dangers of a “born-to-rule” mentality and emphasizing the need to respect other ethnic groups.
The statement specifically addressed the Sultan’s message, which was conveyed through Imam Haroun Eze, the Deputy National Adviser of the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs. It referred to a failed attempt to impose Sharia courts in Oyo and Ekiti States and asserted that the Yoruba people will not accept any form of religious imposition.
While acknowledging the traditional importance of the Sultan, the Yoruba Nation emphasized that Yoruba people have their own respected rulers, such as the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo. The statement further argued that Yoruba Muslims do not recognize the Sultan as their leader, particularly given the Fulani-led attacks that have caused suffering among Yoruba Muslims.
The movement also criticized what it sees as a lack of respect from the Fulani leadership toward other ethnic groups, condemning the Sultan’s statement as reflective of an attitude of dominance in Nigerian affairs.
It concluded by blaming past Nigerian political decisions for allowing the British colonial legacy of Fulani dominance to persist.
