The Delta boat tragedy, which occurred over the weekend in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, has left many devastated. Over 30 passengers, including a one-year-old toddler, perished when a speedboat, returning from a burial ceremony, collided with a submerged log. The crash caused the boat to capsize, throwing many passengers into the water, with most unable to swim and not wearing life jackets. Many of those who fell overboard drowned immediately.
Eyewitnesses reported that the boat was traveling at high speed when the accident occurred, and survivors described desperate attempts to stay afloat. Rescue teams have been searching the area, but with many still missing, hopes of finding survivors are diminishing. The body of the toddler was discovered hours later in the creek, adding to the sorrow of the incident.
Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, has promised to provide more information once further details are available.
