Opposition Lawmakers Applaud Governor Fubara’s Compliance with Supreme Court Ruling

NEWSIE EVENTS :

A coalition of opposition lawmakers has praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara for adhering to the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Local Government Area elections.

The lawmakers commended Fubara’s decision to appoint Heads of Personnel to oversee the councils as directed by the court, pending fresh elections. They described this move as a clear demonstration of his commitment to democracy.

In a statement on Sunday, opposition spokesperson Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere lauded Fubara for maintaining a democratic stance despite resistance from groups aligned with former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

According to the lawmakers, Fubara’s actions reflect his respect for the rule of law and dedication to democratic principles. They also noted that the fate of the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers, who were sacked after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023, remains undecided as the case is still before the Appeal Court. Until a final ruling is made, the opposition maintains that these lawmakers cannot be recognized.

The coalition reiterated that the 27 defectors are “constitutionally sacked” until higher courts issue verdicts on their defection.

Ugochinyere also announced that the opposition coalition would formally address the nation after obtaining the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment to clarify their stance on other political issues in the state.

He urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that the opposition remains committed to seeking lawful and peaceful resolutions to uphold constitutional order.
