The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the dismissal of Barrister Hashim Abioye as the chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), just weeks before the local government elections scheduled for February 22, 2025. The APC argues that Abioye’s appointment by Governor Ademola Adeleke is unconstitutional, citing sections of the 1999 Constitution. The party claims that Abioye is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and contested for a seat in the Osun State House of Assembly in 2019 under the PDP.
In response, OSSIEC’s Information Officer, Sadiat Isiaka, dismissed the allegations as false. She clarified that there are several ongoing legal cases involving the commission, including appeals related to the 2022 local government elections, which were nullified by the Federal High Court. However, the appeals were dismissed, affirming the invalidation of the 2022 elections and the removal of officials, many of whom belonged to the APC.
Isiaka emphasized that these legal matters do not affect the upcoming local government elections, assuring the public that the election process will proceed smoothly.
