Following the recent Owo Catholic Church Masacre which claimed the lives of about 50 worshippers in Ondo State, Governors of the South West have met and taken actions to stem the tide of security challenges ranging from banditry, kidnapping and terror attacks sweeping across the region.
At a virtual meeting held on Friday, the governors deliberated extensively on the rising wave of insecurity in the country, especially in their region.
The Governors, while expressing shock by the attack on St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo-State,
called for immediate intervention in the whole of the South West.
They lamented that the South West have been taken over by some unidentified and unknown migrants.
In a communiqué reached and signed by Governors Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Gboyega Oyetola of Osun, a three-day mourning period was declared in memory of the victims of the terror attack on St Francis Catholic, Owo.
Starting from Monday, June 13 to Wednesday, June 15, 2022, “the Governors should direct the flying of Flags at Half Mast in all public buildings, facilitates and official residences across all the States in the South West in honour of the victims of the Owo terror attack.”
The communiqué, which was made public by Gov Akeredolu on Sunday, quoted the governors as recommending an increase in the scope of surveillance of the activities those they tagged undocumented settlers by relevant security agencies in all the States.
After reviewing reports from each state in the South West on the factors militating against peace and security in the region, the governors “expressed grave concern on the influx of Okada riders into all parts of the South West, especially the State capitals.”
As a result, it was recommended that efforts should be geared toward identity management of commercial motorcyclists, while stringent regulation be put in place to regulate their operation.
