In response to recent allegations made by Abdourahman Tchiani, the President of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and regional stability in West Africa. Tchiani had claimed that Nigeria, in collaboration with France, was working to destabilize Niger by establishing a military base in Borno State, a move that could destabilize the region.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, issued a statement rejecting these claims, emphasizing that Nigeria has no plans to undermine Niger’s sovereignty or security. He stressed the deep historical, cultural, and economic ties between the two nations, highlighting their interconnected destinies.

The minister also reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful dialogue, in line with the principles of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and expressed Nigeria’s readiness to engage in discussions with Niger’s leadership to address mutual concerns. Furthermore, Nigeria called for international support for regional reconciliation and stability, aiming to reduce tensions and promote long-term peace in West Africa.
