After a weekly raid in a market in Mamande Village in Gwadabawa local government area of Sokoto state by Yan-Sakai, a local Hausa vigilante service, no fewer than eleven Fulanis were killed.
Four others who sustained gunshot injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Orthopaedic Hospital, Wamakko.
No reason was given for the attack but it could not be unconnected to the recent killings and abduction in the eastern parts of Sokoto State by bandits, believed to be Fulanis.
The chairman of the local government council, Aminu Aya, who confirmed the incident, said the Yan Sakai came from the neighbouring Goronyo Local Government Area but he could not ascertain whether they were residents of that area or not.
According to him, the Fulanis were from the neighbouring communities and came to the market to buy food items, among other things.
He said the incident occurred around 3p.m. on Thursday when the market was full to capacity with business owners and buyers.
Aya described the incident as “unfortunate”, saying that Yan Sakai identified and shot 15 Fulanis on the spot with dane guns.
“Eleven of their victims died instantly while four sustained fractures in their hands as a result of gun shots they sustained.
“As I am speaking to you, we are taking the injured ones to Orthopaedic Hospital in Wamakko while the 11 bodies were deposited in the mortuary, at the state-owned specialist hospital, Sokoto,” he said.
A Fulani, who spoke to THISDAY at the hospital, said the killing was barbaric and an act of brutality.
The chairman said the attackers could not be arrested because they were well armed. It would be recalled that the state government had outlawed Yan Sakai because of their alleged excessiveness.
The spokesman of the Sokoto Police Command, ASP Sanusi Abubakar, could not be reached as at the time of filing this report.(Thisday)
