The House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to extend the implementation of the 2023 supplementary budget to June 2024.President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had written the House of Representatives, asking it to extend the period for the implementation of the capital component of the 2023 appropriation bill from March 31, 2024, to June 30, 2024.The President’s request, which was read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, explained that the extension became necessary to ensure that the provisions of both the 2023 appropriation and the supplementary acts were fully implemented.Speaking shortly after the extension was granted by the house, the Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Public Procurement, Rep. Unyime Idem, urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, to take advantage of the three-month extension to complete all pending projects and programmes in the 2023 budget cycle. According to Idem, “this advice is necessary as there won’t be any further extension. From June, the focus will be on the 2024 budget.”The Public Procurement Committee chairman also advised MDAs to accelerate the procurement plan for the 2024 budget, in order to meet up the 12-months calendar year budget cycle, noting that “there won’t be a repeat of the 2023 budget extension.” Idem reiterated that the extension of the 2023 budget cycle was to give MDAs the opportunity to execute and complete all their programs and projects for the 2023 fiscal year.
