Reps Minority Caucus Demands Justice and Compensation for Minors Detained During #EndBadGovernance Protest

Newsie Events:

The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has called for compensation for minors who were detained by the police for three months on charges related to terrorism, felony, and arson during the #EndBadGovernance protest. The caucus, in a statement issued on Friday, also demanded investigations, prosecutions, and punishments for those responsible, including individuals and government agencies involved in the unlawful detention of the minors and other youths who participated in the August protest.

The statement, signed by Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda, Minority Whip Dr. Ali Isa J.C., Deputy Minority Leader R. Aliyu Madaki, and Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, emphasized the need for accountability and compassion in handling the situation, which has sparked both national and international outrage.

While commending President Tinubu for the release of the detained youths, the caucus condemned the actions taken against them as “despicable, callous, and inhumane.” They stressed that those responsible for the youths’ 95-day detention should be held accountable, as it deprived the minors of valuable time that could have been spent pursuing education or vocational activities.

The caucus also expressed concern over the psychological and health effects the minors may have experienced during their detention and urged the government to provide necessary therapeutic support and medical care to aid their reintegration into their families. Additionally, they called for reparation packages to help ease the hardship, emotional distress, and trauma experienced by the minors and their families during the period of detention.

Finally, the caucus advocated for reformatory therapy and medical assistance to be provided to the children, recognizing the long-term effects of their unlawful incarceration and the need for support as they return to their homes.
