As the Christmas and New Year celebrations approach, residents of Osun State are calling on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other relevant agencies to reduce the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and ensure its consistent supply. The community is concerned that any fuel price hike or shortages could negatively impact travel, business, family gatherings, and the cost of food, all essential to holiday celebrations.
Bayo Olaniyi, a commercial driver in Osogbo, emphasized the strain the current fuel prices have placed on finances, warning that any increase or scarcity would make it difficult for many to operate during this critical period. Folake Adeyemi, a trader at Oja Oba Market, echoed these concerns, noting that rising fuel prices have already led to higher transportation costs, which, in turn, are affecting the prices of goods and services. She expressed worry that further increases or scarcity could worsen the already strained economic situation.
The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) also voiced concerns, highlighting the risk of artificial scarcity disrupting travel plans during the festive season. Suleiman Akanbi, an NURTW member in Osun, urged the NNPCL to ensure stable fuel supply so that families could travel and reconnect without the added worry of fuel-related challenges.
Residents also recalled past instances of hoarding and panic buying, which led to long queues and inflated fuel prices. They have urged the government to monitor fuel marketers and impose sanctions on those engaging in such practices. Youth leader Oluwasegun Ajayi called on NNPCL to be proactive in avoiding a repeat of these issues, stressing the need for authorities to take action.
With the holiday season approaching, the people of Osun State hope that their appeal for affordable and readily available fuel will be heeded, sparing them the stress and economic strain often caused by fuel-related problems during the yuletide.
