Honourable Martins Amaewhule, the Speaker of the pro-Wike group of lawmakers, has issued a strong condemnation of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara’s plan to present a budget of N800 billion for 2025 without legislative approval. Amaewhule accused the governor of undermining the Constitution and democratic norms by allowing the state to engage in government spending without the required legislative oversight.
He described the situation in Rivers State as unprecedented, stating that no other state in Nigeria operates in such a manner. In a live broadcast on TVC, he further expressed concern over what he believes is a blatant disregard for constitutional provisions, labeling Fubara’s actions as an unprecedented challenge to Nigeria’s democratic governance.
Amaewhule also issued a stern warning to state officials, including permanent secretaries, the State Accountant General, and commissioners, emphasizing that their involvement in unauthorized public spending would have legal repercussions. “Some people must take the bullet for our democracy,” he asserted, underscoring his commitment to ensuring that those responsible would eventually face the law.
He concluded with a call for the governor and all state officials to respect the Constitution and submit to the authority of the Rivers State Assembly, stressing that there would be legal consequences for those engaged in unlawful financial transactions.
