In a recent statement, Tony Okocha, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, accused Governor Sim Fubara of exacerbating political division within the state. Okocha criticized the governor’s decision to present the 2025 budget to a faction of the state House of Assembly led by Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, which he claimed was in violation of the rule of law and judicial pronouncements.
Okocha emphasized that Rivers State has 30 functional members in its House of Assembly, yet Fubara chose to present the N1.1 trillion budget in what he described as an “illegitimate setting,” referring to the faction led by Oko-Jumbo as a “forum of friends” rather than legitimate legislators.
He warned that this could escalate into the worst political crisis for the state. Despite expectations that Fubara would use the new year to foster peace, Okocha argued that his actions were only deepening divisions in Rivers State.
This conflict stems from ongoing political disagreements, particularly regarding the legitimacy of certain factions within the state’s legislature.
