Governor Siminalayi Fubara have directed directive to Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to take over from the sacked chairmen aligns with the Supreme Court’s ruling, which voided the October 2024 local government elections.
His move also reflects compliance with the court’s decision while maintaining governance continuity in the 23 LGAs.
The situation underscores the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, especially with Fubara acknowledging his disagreement with the judgment but committing to uphold the rule of law. The abolition of caretaker committees in Nigeria’s local government system leaves HLGAs as the only viable administrative option until fresh elections are held.
It will be interesting to see how this transition unfolds and how stakeholders, including the affected chairmen and political actors, react. Do you think this could lead to further political disputes, or will it bring some stability to the state?
