Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation, has expressed support for the establishment of part-time legislatures at both federal and state levels.
Representing the Abia North senatorial district for the APC, Senator Kalu argued that such a move would reduce costs and enhance public trust in the political system. He made these remarks during an interview over the weekend.
Senator Kalu stated, “It would be beneficial if my colleagues and members of the Houses of Assembly agreed to a part-time legislature. We could sit for three months to amend the constitution, then convene four times a year, with emergency sessions as needed. This approach would be more cost-effective than full-time sessions.
“This proposal should extend to all legislative bodies in Nigeria,” he added.
Senator Kalu emphasized that this measure would help lower the cost of governance and suggested regional government as another cost-saving alternative.
“If we adopt a regional government, ministers and legislators would remain the same. I’ve been considering ways to save money for Nigeria, which urgently needs it. I encourage the President and National Assembly to enact such laws to benefit the system and everyone involved,” he said.
He also addressed the misconception about senators’ pay, asserting that they are not adequately compensated.
Kalu urged for a swift constitutional amendment to transition to part-time legislatures for the Senate, House of Representatives, and all 36 state houses of assembly, which he believes would foster public trust and provide relief to Nigerians.
