Former Senator of Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has dismissed the recent allegations made by Niger’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu was involved in the creation of the Lakurawa terrorist group. Sani called the claims “baseless” and strongly rejected the suggestion that such a group could be sheltered within Nigeria.
In an interview on Radio-Télévision du Niger, Tchiani accused President Tinubu of colluding with France to destabilize Niger and suggested that the Lakurawa group, allegedly responsible for the attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline on December 13, 2024, was operating with the support of Nigerian security forces.
In response, Sani emphasized that Nigeria, having been a victim of prolonged terrorist activity itself, could not possibly be harboring a terrorist group like Lakurawa. He stated that Tchiani’s allegations were “wild conjectures, hollow, superstitious, and an imaginary conspiracy theory” with no solid evidence to back them.
Through a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sani urged both Nigeria and Niger to cooperate in the fight against terrorism, calling for a joint effort to confront the growing security challenges in the region.
“The specific claim made by the President of Niger Republic about the complicity of Nigeria in the formation of the Lakurawa terrorist group is baseless,” Sani wrote. “For a country whose people have suffered over a decade of kidnappings and bloodshed at the hands of terrorists, it’s inconceivable that such a terrorist group could ever be harbored here.”
He concluded by stressing that the way forward was for both nations to unite and focus on addressing their shared security threats, rather than engaging in unsubstantiated blame.
