Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, has issued a warning to Nigerians contemplating migration, advising them against fleeing to countries that may be worse off than Nigeria.
In a recent video posted on X, Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerian influencers and bloggers to help convey this message, stressing that many destinations might not offer the opportunities or safety they seek. She stated, “Where you are running to is worse than where you are running from.”
Her comments follow a viral video of Nigerians in a Malian prison pleading for assistance. Dabiri-Erewa noted that some of the individuals featured in the video had previously been evacuated from Mali but returned. She emphasized the importance of adhering to the laws of other countries, highlighting the dangers associated with irregular migration and criminal activity.
The commission is currently working with missions to explore options for bringing those in distress back to Nigeria.
