Tension is rising among commissioners in Akwa Ibom State as Governor Umo Eno prepares to dissolve the State Executive Council (EXCO) on January 10, 2025. Eno, who succeeded Udom Emmanuel, had inherited the previous administration’s commissioners and advisers, except for the Commissioner for Internal Security, Koko Essien.
The dissolution comes after Eno’s announcement in 2024 that new professionals would be brought in to inject fresh ideas into governance. Some commissioners, who have served in the position for nearly a decade, including during the tenure of former Governor Godswill Akpabio, are now facing an uncertain future.
Sources within the governor’s office revealed that a valedictory council meeting was scheduled for Friday to officially mark the dissolution. Last week, commissioners reportedly received a “favorable handshake” from the governor, signaling the end of their tenure. Governor Eno had previously criticized the commissioners for expressing dissatisfaction with their roles but showing no intention to resign, likening them to a “nagging housewife” who complains about her marriage yet stays in it. To honor the outgoing members, the state government will also host a dinner night.
