There is a tense atmosphere in Midim Clan, Abak Local Government Area, following the controversial appointment of Chief Paul Thompson Ebong as the clan head by Governor Pastor Umo Eno. This decision has raised questions, as it contradicts the selection of Eteidung Sylvester Okokon Ibanga, who was officially elected clan head on February 15, 2024.
According to the minutes from the selection meeting at the Customary Court, Eteidung Ibanga received eight votes, decisively defeating Chief Patrick Ukanga, who garnered just one vote. Notably, Chief Ebong was absent during this selection and did not communicate with the Midim council regarding his absence.
In a series of letters to the governor, the Midim Clan Traditional Rulers Council has voiced strong objections, labeling the governor’s actions as a “fraudulent attempt” to override the legitimate selection process. The council expressed fears that this could incite conflict and disrupt the longstanding peace within the community.
Eteidung Ibanga emphasized that his selection was formally communicated to the appropriate authorities but met with delays and lack of responses. Despite the council’s persistent attempts to secure his official recognition, they were shocked to learn of the governor’s issuance of a certificate to Ebong, who did not participate in the selection.
Community leaders, including the paramount rulers from neighboring areas, have echoed support for Ibanga, condemning the governor’s actions as undermining traditional practices. Youth leaders have also expressed deep concern, characterizing the situation as a potential catalyst for unrest.
As tensions mount, Chief Paul Ebong has declined to comment on the matter for now, while the traditional institution in Midim remains in disarray, with many village heads reportedly boycotting his inaugural meeting.
