The leadership of Nigeria Automobile technicians popularly known as mechanic village in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital has called on the state government under the current administration to intervene on the flood situation that is constantly overwhelming the mechanics village especially during a heavy downpour that is consistently happening in Uyo.
Obong Ekanem Okon Etuk, the Chairman of the mechanic village made this appeal while addressing journalist at his office in Uyo, said that the government should step into their aid and salvage the flood condition currently faced by the mechanics in the village.
He said the last heavy downpour damaged many vehicles, invaded into many shops including the administrative office and has destroyed many documents.
The Chairman while pleading for quick intervention from the state government, revealed that the mechanic village has accommodated over ten thousand people with their registered voters cards ready to support the government of the day in 2023, plead that the government should come down and rescue them from the flood problem.
He said since the government cannot relocate them as they earlier promised, they should provide drainage as alternative to the flood out of the machine workshop.
Obong Ekanem while lamenting the situation of the automobile, also commended the effort of Governor Udom Emmanuel in road construction and commissioning of lofty human touching projects that will stand a lifetime for the benefit of the people. He described the Governor as a listening leader who is posed to respond to the call of his people whenever the needs arises.
He said the people working in the mechanics village are hundred percent supporting the succession agenda of the Governor, which they have all queue behind the gubernatorial candidate of PDP Pastor Umoh Eno as the incoming Governor of the state.
While calling on the government for intervention, he also called on individuals to come in and assist them in their little capacity. The government should also know that the mechanics have equally assisted them to create massive employment outside those on apprenticeship and this is a big assistant rendered to the state government.
He said the flood usually pulled from Akwa serving, Afaha Offot village and Abak Road and once the water flood into mechanics village there is no alternative route because the gutters are blocked and there is no single drainage in the mechanic village to channel out the water.
Currently some workshop owners are in serious problem because many of their customers’ engines are affected by the water, therefore the government and even the non-governmental organisation should see the need to step and interven for us.
