The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the revocation of 762 plots of land in Abuja, located in the Maitama II District. This action was taken against high-profile individuals and organizations, including former President Muhammadu Buhari’s Muhammadu Buhari Trust Foundation, former Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, among others. The plots were revoked for failing to pay the required Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) bills.
Additionally, 614 other individuals and entities have been given a two-week ultimatum to settle their outstanding payments, or they too will face revocation of their land rights. The revocation is in accordance with the provisions of Section 28 of the Land Use Act of 1978, which allows for the withdrawal of rights of occupancy if certain conditions, including the non-payment of required fees, are breached.
The action affects several former and current politicians, including former Governors Rochas Okorocha, Seriake Dickson, and Ben Ayade, as well as members of the National Assembly like Dino Melaye and Shehu Sani. The FCTA’s decision highlights the government’s intent to enforce the terms of land grants in the capital territory.
