Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, has challenged the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding the South-South zonal congress. Despite a court injunction from a Port Harcourt High Court preventing the congress, Wike and his supporters proceeded with the event in Calabar, Cross River State.
The PDP’s NWC has distanced itself from this gathering, stating that it was not officially sanctioned. In his address at the congress, Wike emphasized the strength of the South-South zone within the PDP and asserted that no other zonal congress would take place after this one. He urged delegates to elect officials committed to defending and protecting the party.
This development highlights ongoing tensions within the PDP, particularly between Wike and the party’s national leadership. Wike, a prominent figure in the party, has had a history of disagreements with the NWC, especially following the 2022 presidential primaries where he was a key contender. His recent actions suggest a continued assertion of influence within the party, especially in the South-South region.
The PDP’s internal dynamics have been complex, with various factions vying for control and influence. The NWC, responsible for the party’s day-to-day operations, has faced challenges in maintaining unity, especially when prominent members like Wike take independent actions. The outcome of this recent congress and the party’s response may have significant implications for the PDP’s cohesion and strategy moving forward.
It’s essential to monitor how the PDP’s national leadership addresses this situation and whether any reconciliatory measures will be taken to bridge the apparent divide. The party’s ability to manage internal disputes will be crucial in maintaining its position and effectiveness in Nigeria’s political landscape.
