Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has stated that he will comment on President Bola Tinubu’s administration only when he has something meaningful to say, urging Nigerians not to impose a timeline on him.
Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, Soyinka addressed those reminding him of his earlier statement that he would assess Tinubu’s government after one year in office, a milestone that passed on May 29, 2024.
“People should stop trying to set my timetable. I haven’t swallowed an alarm clock,” he said. “I don’t see why I must make an assessment just because a year has passed if I have nothing pressing to say or if I am engaged elsewhere.”
Soyinka had previously visited Tinubu’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, on December 24, 2023.
During that visit, when asked to evaluate the administration, he had said he would reserve his comments until May 2024.
Critics have accused Tinubu’s government of economic mismanagement, citing record-high inflation and a rising cost of living.
With the administration approaching its second year in office by May 2025, many had expected Soyinka to follow through on his promise.
However, the literary icon emphasized that assessing a government is not solely his responsibility.
He pointed out that various individuals, including activists and legal professionals, have been actively voicing concerns.
“This idea that ‘you haven’t spoken yet’—I don’t understand it.
Others are speaking. It’s a collective effort. The Falanas, the Baiyewus, the Sowores—they are all doing their part,” Soyinka stated.
He also questioned why people expected him to issue a formal review of Tinubu’s administration when he had never done so for past presidents like Jonathan, Buhari, or Obasanjo.
“All it means is that a year has passed. If I am available and someone asks, I will respond. That’s all my statement meant,” he concluded.
